The Meeting House
for Justice and Joy
Working for Justice
Working for justice is a vital part of our faith at First Parish. Our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every person compels us to act in the world in ways that promote human dignity and flourishing, social and racial equity, and a healthy future for our planet.
Here are some of the ways we do that!
Greater Boston Interfaith Organization
First Parish is an active member of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO). GBIO involves First Parish members in justice work with over 60 faith groups and other organizations in the Greater Boston area. GBIO builds deep relationships within our own congregation and across GBIO members, while fostering leadership and collective power to address justice issues locally and statewide, including: expanding affordable housing, upgrading public housing, improving access to mental health and substance use services, and improving access to housing for formerly incarcerated people.
Beyond Borders–Sin Fronteras
Our Beyond Borders–Sin Fronteras task force promotes education and awareness of local and global immigration issues and advocates for local, state, and national policy and legislative changes. BBSF supports the initiatives of UU Mass Action and other immigrant advocacy and service groups. Its primary goals are to educate, bear witness, create awareness, and participate as advocates in immigration issues.
Environmental Justice Team
The Environmental Justice Team provides the congregation with opportunities to advocate for a just and sustainable world and organizes events to educate First Parish members and friends about environmental justice. The team also works with UU Mass Action and other groups on environmental legislation and against new fossil fuel infrastructure, while supporting local advocacy groups such as GreenRoots Chelsea Inc. and ACE (Alternatives for Community and Environment). Middle East Education Group
The Middle East Education Group provides opportunities for the congregation to learn about the history and cultures of the Middle East, and to engage with local faith groups and other organizations.
Racial Equity Team
The Racial Equity Team (RET) leads efforts to promote racial justice throughout congregational life. We work with the Governing Board, ministry team leaders, staff, and the congregation to examine institutional processes and provide opportunities for education, conversation, and action. Legacy of Slavery Resources
The Legacy of Slavery Resources list contains key documents, websites, exhibits, presentations, and videos, with links, that center and contextualize the involvements of early First Parish congregants in slavery. Resources of neighboring faith communities, Harvard University, and Cambridge are included. This list is intentionally select and brief to serve as an accessible starting point for reading and research.
